More water, more opportunities: CMPC’s contribution to rural communities

Access to safe drinking water remains a significant challenge in rural areas of Chile, where many communities still lack formal supply systems. In response, CMPC, together with the social organization Desafío Levantemos Chile —a Chilean foundation focused on supporting vulnerable communities— leads the “Desafío Agua para Chile” program.

Since its launch in 2019, the program has reached an important milestone: the implementation of 100 projects across southern Chile. Through solutions such as deep well drilling, installation of distribution systems, and improvements to existing infrastructure, this initiative has provided access to safe water to more than 5.000 families.
The 100th project is being developed in the municipality of Collipulli, in southern Chile, where 25 families will gain access to a reliable water source for the first time, both for daily consumption and productive activities.

For these communities, the change is profound and transformative. Ana María Viveros, president of the beneficiary community, describes their previous situation:

“With my family and neighbors, we have to organize ourselves to be able to use water. We depend on springs from some families, on water that is sometimes delivered by the municipality in trucks, and on the rainwater we collect in our tanks. We have had to learn to prioritize water, because sometimes it even limits our ability to cook.”

Beyond infrastructure, the impact of these initiatives is tangible: dependence on precarious water sources is reduced, sanitary conditions improve, and new opportunities for local development emerge, particularly in areas such as agriculture and family-based entrepreneurship.

This progress reflects the value of collaboration between the private sector and social organizations, with a clear focus on addressing urgent needs in local communities. For the families involved, access to water not only makes daily life easier but fundamentally transforms their opportunities. Through initiatives like this, CMPC seeks to be present where it is most needed, contributing in a meaningful way to community well-being.
