1-¿What is the role of the Environment Division at CMPC?
CMPC created the Environmental Division, tasked with environmental Compliance and Management. Reporting directly to the CEO, its role is to ensure the highest standard in environmental performance throughout the operations and to make the Company’s new projects and businesses viable, in coherence with its Sustainability Strategy.

2-What does it mean for CMPC to speak of the Environment?
Caring for the environment is one of our corporate values, and we adhere to sustainable development because we understand that our work depends on natural resources. We are a global company, and it is our responsibility to achieve flawless operations based on a long-term preventive culture, seeking to minimize and control the environmental impacts of our activities, products and services. In addition, in 2019, we set demanding sustainability goals that are in full progress and move from a linear to a circular economy. With this, we seek not to affect the next generations.

3- What is the Environment management currently focused on?
Currently, the Environment Management is focused on:

  • Generate technical and operational standards that allow establishing crosscutting criteria for the management of relevant environmental aspects and impacts of the Company, including the identification of gaps, the lifting of controls or their elimination, and reporting. All of the above, in support of meeting the goals committed by the Company in terms of water, waste and emissions.
  • Ensure compliance with the current environmental regulatory and normative frameworks in those regions where CMPC operates, in order to achieve continuous improvement of results with the highest industry standards.

4- What is the company’s contribution to the global goal of reducing emissions?
In 2019, the Company measured the carbon footprint for all its operations for the third year, identifying the activities with the greatest reduction potential and, as a climate change mitigation measure, established the goal of reducing its absolute emissions by 50% of greenhouse gases (direct and indirect) by 2030, taking 2018 as a baseline. Through this commitment, we contribute to goal 13.3 of the Sustainable Development Goal “Climate Action, which states: improve education, awareness and human and institutional capacity regarding the mitigation of climate change, adaptation to it, the reduction of its effects and early warning ”.

5- How is the need to protect the environment compatible with our products?
CMPC’s mission is to produce and market, from certified plantations under sustainable forest management, wood, pulp, packaging products, papers, tissue and personal care products, with superior and competitive quality, taking care of the environment and ensuring at the same time, shared value with our stakeholders.
We have certifications that allow us to maintain and monitor compliance with product quality and safety standards, supporting the performance of sustainable forest management, as well as the chain of custody and control of wood. In addition, we have quality, environment, energy, occupational health and safety, and food safety management systems.

6- How do you see the company in its next 100 years in terms of the environment?
Empresas CMPC is a multinational company, with more than 100 years of history and we have the capabilities, experience and commitment to sustainable development, which allows us to grow and develop for another 100 years.Today, we are working to respond to the sustainable consumer of the future. Our focus is in the development of the forestry industry of the future, fiber supply, reducing emissions, conserving and protecting biodiversity; the development of sustainable packaging, replacing plastic with natural fibers; looking for more efficient ways to use water and sustainable construction with alternative materials to traditional ones.
